For three years running Serco Group have
won a Business in the Community Big
Tick Award for their overall efforts on their “Skills- for-You” project. N-Gage’s work with
Serco has been a huge contributing factor
to this success and together we submitted
a partnership application for the National
Training Award 2007.
How we N-GAGED:
Following a change of management on
the Serco contract at Airbus in 2004, it
was identified that there was a shortfall
in skills and abilities of some of the team
that hindered the development of the
contract – from basic paperwork to the
confidence of knowledgeable staff to
move to more influential roles.
The “Skills for You” project was introduced
into Serco’s central development team as
a project that seemed to meet their needs
as a company as well as giving something
back to their staff. N-GAGED were swiftly
identified as ideal partners to provide
this training.
N-GAGED’s Becky Stallard assessed staff,
and as some staff had not taken part
in any training in many years pre-course
discussions were undertaken with staff
to ensure they were comfortable with the
process. Becky spent a day doing initial
assessments with staff, and putting them
at ease with the concept of learning.
Following the initial assessments the first
group of learners were identified, and
English courses began in October 2005
and are ongoing.
By taking part in the basic skills training,
it has enabled staff to have the confidence
to undertake further training such as a
variety of NVQs as well as putting their
name forward for promotion or other jobs
that were previously out of their reach.
